Thuja is a small, upright conifer with finely textured, scale-like green foliage and a naturally tapered form. It is usually grown in a pot while young and makes a crisp structural accent in a sunny porch, balcony or garden. Its roots need air as much as water, so it suits a free-draining potting mix and a container with drainage holes. It is not a low-light houseplant; give it strong light and regular airflow.

How to keep it alive
Thuja (Platycladus orientalis) grows best in bright sun, free-draining soil, and water only when dry; never leave its roots constantly wet in rain.

Wait until the soil is dry all the way through. Overwatering is the usual killer.
Keep away from pets
Thuja foliage and oils contain compounds including thujone. Chewing or swallowing parts may cause mouth or stomach irritation and can be harmful to pets or children.
In Malaysia: In Malaysia, grow it where it receives strong sun and good airflow, ideally sheltered from prolonged monsoon downpours. High humidity and wet potting mix can cause decline; air-conditioned rooms can dry the root ball quickly and are usually too dim for long-term growth.
